Dry Bulk
Terminal 2 Berth 7: Dry Bulk Export Dock
- Dock Length:800 lineal feet with dolphins
- Dock Height: 30 feet
- Berth Depth: 40 feet (mlw)*
Our specialized dry bulk dock is capable of exporting a broad range of dry bulk commodities quickly and efficiently. We have all the equipment to get the job done: a loop track capable of handling 104-car unit trains; a 26-car indexer; a bottom dump pit and covered conveyor system with direct transfer from railcar to vessel. In addition, our 160,000-square-foot bulk sheds; clamshell buckets; portable conveyors and hoppers, and front-end loaders and dump trucks make the port a perfect transshipment location for a wide variety of dry bulk goods.
For ores and other materials shipped in gondola cars, the port's elevated mobile equipment can stockpile at a rate of 250 metric tons per hour. There is also a covered overhead bridge crane available for removal of car covers.
In February 2006, Port of Vancouver Commissioners approved the addition of a 72,000 sq. ft. storage facility to capitalize on the exploding copper concentrate export market.
The need for the new building is based on a 92 percent increase in dry bulk exports through the port in 2005 and projected continuing demand from Asian markets. Copper concentrate, a new export for the port in late 2004, totaled 268,132 metric tons last year. An additional 187,842 metric tons of bentonite clay were also exported.
The port's reclaim system and outloader can operate at a rate of up to 1,200 metric tons per hour, depending on the material. Its telescoping boom and spout are automated, and the boom outreach is 87 feet (25m) at the bull rail. The Port's bulk facility is operated by Kinder Morgan Bulk Terminals, Inc.
Terminal 2 Grain Elevator Wharf
- Dock Length:715 lineal feet with dolphins
- Dock Height: 30 feet
- Berth Depth: 40 feet (mlw)*
The grain terminal, owned by the port, leased by United Grain Corporation and operated by United Harvest L.L.C., a subsidiary of Mitsui Trading Company, of Japan. The facility consists of a 715-foot dock and a barge dock that allows simultaneous barge off-loading at a rate of 40,000 bushels per hour, and a vessel loading rate of 80,000 bushels per hour. The elevator has storage capacity for 5 million bushels, with more than 250 cement silos for segregating wheat types and qualities at the facility. United Grain Corporation is the largest wheat exporting elevator on the U.S. West Coast. Due to continual expansion and upgrading the elevator, originally built in 1934, is among the most efficient handlers of grain in the world.
