Vancouver CFS

Business Specialty: Vancouver CFS is a small business at the Port of Vancouver USA that touches points all around the globe and has a strong reputation for handling tough loads. And that makes them a perfect fit for the port and Vancouver. Owner Tom Gefre is proud of his
company’s ability to handle tough loads, including damaged containers. Gefre has been in business at the port
for 13 years and has one employee. He does, however, hit peaks in his business when he needs more employees. In those circumstances, he hires temporary help from HireSource’sVancouver office.

As an operation that’s largely considered a “transloader,” moving cargo from one mode of transportation to another, Vancouver CFS accepts aluminum that comes in on Swire ships that is then loaded out to trucks bound for Kaiser Aluminum in Spokane. Among the other cargos handled at Vancouver CFS are lumber from New Zealand, Malaysia, South America, Southeast Asia and Chile; as well as plastic strapping
from Virginia.

Vancouver CFS will also soon be handling imported steel coils (from Sumitomo), that are loaded to truck for delivery around the Pacific Northwest. Vancouver CFS also uses the port’s rail system, for loads of cargo to points outside of the region.

As with many other port tenants and operations, Vancouver CFS is concerned about environmental sustainability. They recently participated in a lighting upgrade provided by the port, through a program at Clark Public Utilities. Gefre says he’s impressed and pleased by the way the new lighting system lights up the warehouse. He’s also happy with the way unused areas of the warehouse stay dark until motion detectors find a reason to illuminate them.
